Ethics in Planned Giving: A Practical Approach to Professional Dilemmas

Fundraising and planned giving professionals can encounter situations in their day to day work that require ethical decisions that have consequences for their donors, for their institutions, and for themselves. Charlie will lead a conversation about what ethics mean in the context of fundraising and planned giving and how to make ethical decisions using real-world examples drawn from his experiences in the field, and will discuss practical tools and strategies for resolving them in the best interests of all involved.

Charles B. Gordy, J.D. is the Director of Planned Giving at Harvard Law School, which he joined in 2008.  Prior to that, he managed planned giving services for The Bank of New York, and was the Director of Planned Giving at Yale University, Tufts University, and The Wilderness Society. He has served on the boards of the American Council on Gift Annuities, of the National Committee on Planned Giving, of the Planned Giving Group of Greater New York, and of the Planned Giving Group of New England, of which he served as president from 2013-2014.  He is a trustee of the Chewonki Foundation, Wiscasset, Maine and chair of its Advancement Committee. He received his undergraduate degree from Colby College, Waterville, Maine, and his law degree from George Washington University Law School. He resides in Concord, Massachusetts.
