What is the Mentoring Program?

The Mentoring Program is a program for members of CPGR who wish to grow professionally and personally through a mentor-protégé relationship.

The Mentoring Program is designed to:

  • increase personal fulfillment;
  • promote professional development;
  • enhance mutual respect and sense of community; and
  • promote a culture of generosity.

What is a protégé

A protégé is a receiver, trainee, learner, or individual who seeks knowledge and support from a mentor. It is important that protégés be receptive to feedback and be enthusiastic about personal and professional growth.

How do I become a protégé?

Anyone interested may submit a Protégé Information Form to the Mentoring Program Steering Committee no later than November 28, 2016. If you are not a current CPGR Member you will be required to join to participate.  The protégé selection process is based on making the best possible matches with available mentors. The maximum participants for 2017 will be 10 pairs (Protégés – Mentors). Applicants will be notified of the outcome in by December 21, 2016.

What if I want to participate but cannot afford CPGR membership?

There will be two scholarships awarded for protégés who would like to participate but cannot afford the $95 membership fee. You must fill out that section of the Protégé Information Form to apply.

What is a mentor?

A mentor is an experienced individual, teacher, or coach who shares his/her knowledge and experience with another person called a protégé. Read CPGR Mentor Responsibilities

How are mentors selected?

The Mentoring Program Steering Committee will develop a pool of potential mentors from several sources: Mentor Interest Surveys, nominations from the CPGR community, and Steering Committee nominations.  All surveys  must be received no later than Monday, November 28, 2016. The Steering Committee will invite appropriate individuals to join the pool of potential mentors. Individuals who agree to be in this pool will be asked to complete a Mentor Interest Survey to facilitate the matching process. Mentors will be matched to protégés and notified about the outcome of the process by December 21, 2016.

How are mentors matched with protégés?

Members of the Mentoring Program Steering Committee will carefully evaluate all of the information before selecting and matching mentors and protégés. Special attention will be given to the compatibility of goals, experiences, personalities, and interests. Every effort will be made to make the most successful pairings possible. Protégés will be matched with mentors from different organizations.

How often do the mentors and protégés meet?

Each mentor-protégé pair will have 6-8 eight meetings from January – December 2017. Half of those meetings should be face-to-face; phone conversations are okay for the other half. We will begin our program year in January 2017 with a kick-off event for all program participants on January 20, 2017. This will give mentor-protégés matches the opportunity to meet each other as well as meet others in the program.

If I participate in The Mentoring Program, will I get a raise or promotion?

The Program has no direct bearing on job security, promotions, or raises. Mentors have no involvement with their protégés’ supervisors. The mentor – protégé relationship is confidential and no information is shared with anyone unless both partners agree. Mentors are often good listeners and a resource for asking questions and proposing alternative perspectives on issues. Mentors can make appropriate referrals, but they are not employee advocates or intercessors.

Who coordinates The Mentoring Program?

The Mentoring Program Steering Committee coordinates the Program. Current members include: Gloria Jara Price (Chair),  Ashley Buderus, Dean Laatt, Sharon McMeel & Gordon Smith.
